The Boston Tea Party was a midnight raid in which a band of 60 colonists led by Samuel Adams dumped $18,000 worth of tea into the Boston Harbor. This act of rebellion was performed in defiance of the 1773 Tea Act, which gave the East India Company a monopoly on tea trade. In a larger sense, it signaled to the colonists the growing threat of the British empire against their liberty.
